The Joy of Drinking

joy-of-drinkingBarbara Holland’s witty little tome is a joy, indeed. And along with noting a plethoric variety of amusing quotes…

“Civilization begins with fermentation…”

William Faulkner

“Sometimes too much drink is barely enough.”

Mark Twain

“He is not drunk who from the floor

Can rise again and drink some more,

But he is drunk who prostrate lies

And cannot drink and cannot rise.”

Thomas Love Peacock

“I like to have a martini –

Two at the very most.

After three I’m under the table,

After four I’m under my host.”

Dorothy Parker

… she also serves up a host of her own astute observations. She notes, for example, the perils of water, milk, AA, coffee, moderation, libational upgrades, and the supposed guardians of our health.

This is a fun book and a wonderful summer diversion. The Joy of Drinking is available at your local bookstore and online. I recommend it highly.
